Conductor's Notes
This arrangement is close to the recording as well. You’ll get a really good feel for the sound by listening.
Here’s how we will navigate the Freely section at the beginning:
I will give the first 3 beats to get to the Clarinet cadenza. Then, the next thing I will do is cut off the chord in m. 2. Then I will give m. 3 beat 1, then hold the bar. Finally, I will give a prep beat to bar 4 and we will be in time.
Tempo from m. 4 onward is = 108. The drums only join the band during the chorus, so it’s our responsibility to keep tempo and not rely on the drummer.
For all staccato notes, aim for open, resonant releases. This will help us fill up the texture, which in the original song is pretty sparse.
Notes:
- m. 36-67 - Not too short on the background hits, even the ones with staccatos. These are piano chords in the original, so they should have a little length and a little taper to simulate the decay of the piano.
- m. 80-end - Treat the background hits as in m. 36-67.
- m. 100-102 - Grace notes before the beat, please.
